You gotta give credit where credit is do.
Survivor Series ended with the ol’ belt off, and the next night they announced that in three simple weeks we’d have a match for both titles. It was kind of a shock, and immediately my mind went to the fact that they were setting us up for a screw job. However, three weeks later, and it’s easy to forget those initial trepidations. After several video packages a contract signing or two and a truly great closing segment to Monday Night Raw and the match between Randy Orton and John Cena really truly feels epic. In my mind it is a clear #3 behind Cena-Punk and Cena-Rock I as most important matches in the Reality Era or whatever we’re supposed to call the post-post-Attitude Era that we’re in now.
Of course the rest of the event features a thrown together tag team match, a hotshot match for the IC title, and not one but two handicap matches. I guess we can’t expect too much here…
As always matches are in order of how they SHOULD Happen…
Dolph Ziggler vs. Fandango
You-Tube Kickoff Match
What SHOULD Happen: Well at least this means that Ziggler-Sandow won’t need to wrestle gimmick matches week after week. Clearly Ziggler is above this and he should get a win. Hopefully this is just temporary and a strong showing in the Rumble can help this dreadful depush come to an end and he can move his way back up the card. He really would make a great ally for Punk and Bryan in their fight against The Authority.
What WILL Happen: Ziggler will win, we’ll all forget soon enough.
Rhodes Brothers vs. The Real Americans
vs. Ryback & Curtis Axel vs. The Big Show & Rey Mysterio
Fatal Four Way Match for the Tag Team Titles
What SHOULD Happen: First off, why on earth are The Big Show and Rey Mysterio a tag team? How exactly did they earn a title shot? It makes no real sense. Ryback and Axel I can live with, and perhaps even enjoy, but I thought that the push in the tag team division meant we were going away from thrown together Main Event teams.
Another thing, why are we not getting a tables match, a ladder match, and a chairs match at this event? This match would be great fun with a ladder or some tables added in. Ohh and where the hell are The Usos? They should have been in here instead of Big E Small (get it?) and those two guys could have joined up with Punk to make that a six-man match. Add ladders to this match, tables to the other and we have ourselves a hell of an event. But what the hell do I know?
As for this match, I don’t see the RhoBros dropping just yet. We’re a bit too far away from Wrestlemania for that to happen. I could see them eliminating each other from the Rumble and dropping the belts soon after to either The Wyatts or the Real Americans. However, that’s not yet. Let’s have Cody pin Axel after a fun finisher-fest.
What WILL Happen: I just don’t see the Rhodes losing yet, so let’s stick to that plan.
Daniel Bryan vs. The Wyatt Family
3-on-1 Handicap Match
What SHOULD Happen: Is it too late to say change it to Daniel Bryan vs. Bray Wyatt in a chairs match? Damn, alright I guess we should see Daniel Bryan put up a hell of a fight but still give in to the numbers game. Let’s have Bray Wyatt stay out of the ring for as long as he can before getting the pin at the very end. As they try for a beat down at the end Punker comes out to make the save swinging a chair.
What WILL Happen: I could actually see that happening…
Impromptu Match/Segment #1
What SHOULD Happen: #BadNewsBarrett all day, every day!
What WILL Happen: We’re going to get either another Kingston-Miz or Del Rio-Cara match with the same results as last time.
Big E. Langston vs. Damien Sandow
Intercontinental Title Match
What SHOULD Happen: Call me crazy, but with the two top titles unifying, I’m hopeful that we may see some more focus on the secondary belts. If that’s the case, there is definitely some potential for a long term feud between these two. Sandow can clearly carry the workload on the mic and he’s a great smarmy heel who you want to see get his comeuppance. However, that does work better as the champion than challenger. But it’s probably too soon to take the belt of Langston. So let’s go with Sandow trying to cheat by using either a chair or the belt, but instead it somehow backfires and Langston wins the day, but we get a nice possibility of a rematch somewhere down the line.
What WILL Happen: I think Langston will win clean as a whistle and their little feud may end up forgotten.
CM Punk vs. The Shield
3-on-1 Handicap Match
What SHOULD Happen: I don’t think that we are going to see both faces lose their handicap matches. While it may make logical sense, it doesn’t really add a ton of interest. I think that we’ll see Punk put up a good fight, but eventually the numbers game catches up and it looks like it’s only a matter of time. Eventually we’ll see Reigns accidentally spear Ambrose, and in the chaos Daniel Bryan come down to the rescue with a chair and they clear the ring standing triumphant as the match ends in a no contest. Triple H comes out and just stares at the two indie darlings.
By the way, how much did the end of RAW make you want to see Punk/Bryan vs. D-X at Wrestlemania? Come on…
What WILL Happen: I have no idea! Like I said, one of these matches needs to have the good guys win, and it makes more sense for it to be this one, so let’s go with that.
AJ Lee vs. Natalya
Diva’s Title Match
What SHOULD Happen: AJ Lee should be champion for now, forever.
What WILL Happen: I don’t think that Natalya is going to be the one to dethrone AJ. I could see her holding until Wrestlemania when Brie Bella finally takes her down.
Impromptu Match/Segment #2
What SHOULD Happen: Randy Orton argues with Triple H, Stephanie, and Kane about Monday. The Authority guys are upset so they tell him that he’s on his own tonight, for the first time in a long time.
What WILL Happen: The other option of Kingston-Miz or Del Rio-Cara match that we didn’t see earlier..
Randy Orton vs. John Cena
TLC Match for the WWE and World Titles
What SHOULD Happen: You know, even though we all bitched about how repetitive this matchup was back in 2009, pretty much all of their matches were top quality. I expect this one to be no different as both of these guys will do their best at making this epic. As I mentioned before, I think this may be the year that we finally get Cena-Taker and hopefully its for the belt. That would necessitate a Cena win here, a successful title defense either against Orton and/or Kane at the Rumble, Taker as a surprise #30 Rumble winner, followed by a strong Elimination Chamber showing from Cena and ta-da, we have a match that can fill the Superdome.
As for Orton, I’d like to see him stay heel for a while but have The Authority show off their new choice in a returning Sheamus. Tensions come, and eventually Orton turns face and we have ourselves a strong addition to the Mania undercard.
What WILL Happen: I honestly have no idea and I kind of like it. With both Punk and Bryan sliding back into the Main Event we could very well see an Orton win followed by one of those two winning the Rumble to get our Mania title match set…or we could end up with Orton losing the belt to Triple H….uggh….
That SHOULD give us the following card for The Rumble:
- Taker wins the Rumble with a final four of Daniel Bryan who goes for over an hour, Roman Reigns eliminates 12 people, and Ziggler who also clearly looks great. Punks gets eliminated in the middle of the match by surprise entrant Brock Lesnar.
- Unified Title Match: Cena vs. Orton vs. Kane – seeds of mistrust grow
- Tag Title Match: RhoBros drop the titles to the Wyatts when Goldust kicks Cody’s leg out for under his leg
- Diva’s Title Match: AJ Lee vs. Summer Rae
- Triple H vs. Big Show because clearly they forgot about this match
